January 2010 Report FSO-OP 88 (Incoming Officer Report)

I have no report of Operational activity for Dec 2009. An item we should all be aware of as we move through the winter months is water temperature. The graph on page 3-17 in the CG Rescue & Survival Manual, which is referenced in our Operational Policy Manual, lays out what protective gear we must have in relation to air & water temp. When water temp decreases to 50 degrees F & below the 50/50 box says we must employ 1 of 2 dry suit options when U/W. I have not personally checked water temp but have been checking 2 websites that bass fisherman utilize, fishingnotes.com & westernbass.com, as well as our local outdoor reporter Terry Knight to track reported water temp. Basically, I would recommend that anyone planning to get U/W on orders do a temperature check. The info reported puts the lake at mid to high 40’s early & warming to low 50’s as the day progresses. We must all be aware that deviating from Operational Policy can put one at personal financial risk should something go wrong.

Plans for 2010 include the required 2010 Op’s & TCT 1 hour workshops. The workshops are on the National Op’s site but our District generally tinkers with it a bit to include any un-included D11N policies. As soon as D11N announces it’s ready we will schedule it. 2010 plans also include 2 scheduled operational training days per month (TBD) one will be a weekday & one will be a Saturday. The training agenda will include a mix of classroom, underway, & night training opportunities. We may also consider a tool we have used in past years, & this is highly dependant upon current OP’s qualed members and operational facilities, a sort of intensive crew training for members wanting to test this year for their initial Crew or Cox qual. We employed this concept a few years back & it was highly effective in getting several members qualified. More on this as we determine the need/feasibility.
